Surugadai Building Green Space
Components
Surugadai Building, where the head office of Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance is located, has been thoughtfully designed as a green sanctuary in the bustling metropolis of Tokyo. It is surrounded by 6,800 sq m of lush vegetation and has a rooftop garden spanning 2,600 sq m. The trees were strategically planted in a hierarchical structure to have beneficial effects on retaining rainwater and minimising flooding, while expansive green spaces can mitigate the heat island effect.
A certified green development, Surugadai Building is a shining example that embraces biodiversity and enriches the community, right in the heart of the city. Not only does it serve as a peaceful refuge for locals to rest and relax, the plants on the site have been specially selected to attract local species of birds and butterflies. Even rare birds have been spotted amongst the verdant greenery.
The Imperial Palace and Ueno Park are two other havens for wild birds in Tokyo. Located strategically between these two spots, Surugadai Building serves as a green base that complements the ecological network and effectively expands the habitat of wild birds in Tokyo.
