MSIG’s internal challenge to build a paperless culture

Hong Kong

At MSIG Hong Kong, we launched an initiative to encourage our staff to save trees by going paperless. The number of trees in local parks such as Chater Garden and Kowloon Park were used as a reference and our staff were challenged to work towards saving an equivalent number of trees by reducing their paper usage.

Each month, an electronic mailer was sent out to motivate our staff and announce the number of trees that were saved by each department’s reduction of paper use.

Through this initiative, our staff saved a total of 1,083,290 sheets of paper in 2019. This was equivalent to 130 trees or 59% of the total number of trees in Chater Garden, and our overall paper consumption fell by almost 20%.

In line with our goal to save trees and reduce paper consumption, we also rolled out an initiative to use reusable business cards. Our staff were issued reusable and durable plastic business cards that were printed with a QR code. By simply scanning the QR code, the staff’s contact details would be saved to the user’s phone. This proved to be more efficient as our clients and business partners no longer needed to manually input our staff’s contact information. By eliminating the need to print multiple cards, this initiative saved over 200 boxes of paper name cards.
